AROUND 60 YEARS

As we could see at the "Graduation System" I just published before this one, it would take around 60 years to achieve to the highest graduation in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (Red Belt). So, I don't need to tell you its a long-term commitment to achieve our highest goal. I know a lot of people just participate in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) as entertainment or as a sport and they don't really want to make that kind of commitment (60 years...come on!! That's too long, isn't it!?).
Well, I like to see the students as a "Red Belt Project" (RBP). I do it that way because I am an optimistic person. And, as an optimistic person I think life is so good and every single day should be a new adventure, where we learn and we enjoy all aspects of it.
So, expecting to graduate each student as a Red Belt is believing in a long-term journey. In order to achieve this goal we need to maintain a healthy life. Eating healthy, practicing BJJ (physical exercise), maintain good atitudes among family, friends and people you see everyday. In short, in order to achieve the RBP we need to be better. And being a better person I feel proud of myself.
This power is in your hands!

* I would like thank so much my australian friend, Ben Dyer (a very casca grossa friend! By the way...). He had a very kind atitude correcting my previews text (I asked him to help me correcting my english once and he really kept his word). Thank you Ben!

RULES OF CONDUCT (IN CLASS)

1. HAVE ALWAYS THE 3 BASIC TENETS IN YOUR MIND: EXCELLENCE, FRIENDSHIP AND RESPECT
2. Show respect to everybody. Be polite and kind.
3. Gi’s must be kept clean and sanitized. All gi’s must have the required Patches sewn on.
4. Should you arrive late, quickly line up at the edge of the mat and request permission to enter class. The decision to allow a late student onto the mat is entirely at the instructor discretion. The instructor may prefer the student to watch rather than risk injury due to missed warm ups.
5. Family members and friends are invited to watch class however, it is important that small children are contained and quiet during class. Also, only students are permitted on the mat. Please do not enter onto or walk across the mat while classes are going on if you are a spectator.
6. Family members and friends are encouraged to support students in class by applauding good efforts. However it’s not permitted coaching from anyone other than the teacher during the class.
7. Testing is mandatory at all levels. Students are required to attend testing in an approved gi with required Academy patches.
8. It’s expected that all students attend classes at least 2 times per week.
9. If you are on the mat don’t ever turn your back to who is training or teaching.
10. During class when the instructor is teaching a technique or when you watching someone’s training you must avoid be hanging on the wall, sitting with legs stretched and talking to someone else (if you want to share something to someone do it to everybody else, that way everybody is learning too).
11. There is a proper way of fixing the gi and tide the belt, in case you don’t know how, please ask the teacher.
12. Wear an appropriated Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Belt (If you don’t know how is the “approprieated Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Belt”, you should ask someone more graduated than you or the teacher about it).
13. If during the class you want to leave the mat for any reason (like: to drink water, to use the toilet, etc), ask permission for the teacher. And also ask permission to come back to the mat after return from it.
14. We learn from each other all the time on the mat. But specially the people that are training for a longer time have more to teach about it than the ones that are not training for that long. So respect them, you should be very thankful to them. Because you are defenitly learning a lot from them too.

3 steps

Hi Everybody,

Today I want to share how to get good at BJJ in three short sentences.
Obviously the first thing you need to do in the sport is to get the big picture, the view from 30,000 feet.

Once you understand the big picture, and how everything fits
together, then much of your training time should be devoted to
tackling your problems, one by one.

Here's the formula:
First take ONE topic.

Then shine a light on it from every angle.

Move on, and repeat.
If you follow these steps you'll be a serial BJJ monogamist. Your training will have focus, and you'll have a goal for each class.

And the funny thing is that you probably already know what you need to work on.

For example, did you get armlocked 3 times today?

I guess you need to work on your arm positioning!

Are your opponents opening your closed guard with elbow pressure?

Ask your instructor and fellow students how to block this move. Then then keep applying their suggestions in sparring until your response become second nature!

Are you getting nailed by the same sweep over and over?

Figure out how to block and prevent the sweep using posture, weight distribution, grips and the application of leverage.

To recap: pick one topic. Tackle it to the best of your ability.
Then look for the next topic.

It's a simple way to identify and address problem areas, but I guarantee it will give you material to work on for many years of training.

Fortunately it will be a very interesting, very entertaining and very rewarding journey!
